Explore the many worlds of the Olympic and Kitsap Peninsulas and surrounding areas.
You're on your way to another world. Peer into tide pools teeming with life or trace a river through a rain forest, to its glacial source. Ride a bike on rolling roads lined with blackberries or surf and snowboard in the same day. Hike the country's longest sand spit to an historic lighthouse, or simply sit on a massive cedar log and watch the fishing vessels come home.
The protected waters of Kitsap County offer some amazing waterfront escapes. You can kayak in the cool morning and read a book on the beach in the afternoon sun. Out on the Olympic Peninsula, the tide pools are teeming with starfish, timid crabs and translucent urchins. Camp on some of the most spectacular wilderness beaches in the world. In spring, gray whales can be seen just off the coast during their annual migration to northern feeding grounds. Orca whales feed in the waters of Puget Sound, where it's possible to see whole pods from the ferry or even from land.
It's possible to circumnavigate the entire region on your bicycle. Highway 101 on the Olympic Peninsula offers views of rushing rivers and snow-capped Olympic peaks, or try Highway 104 on the Kitsap Peninsula for vistas of Hood Canal and the Cascade Range. Olympic National Forest also offers unsurpassed mountain biking in designated areas.
Feel the flex of your snowboard beneath you and the rush of adrenaline, then stop to snap a few photos of the surreal combination of sea and summits offered at Hurricane Ridge. It's almost like being in a helicopter with a view of the entire Olympic Range with the islands in the strait to the north and even the coastal mountains of Canada glistening in the distance.
